A Biblical Vision, Part I: Mastering the Old Testament Witness to Christ
Session 3: The History of Israel as Type and Analogy in the Old Testament’s Witness to Christ 47
b. As Moses represented God and was the builder of his people, so Jesus too is faithful as God’s representative building God’s people, that is, his house, Heb. 3.1-6 – Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, [2] who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house . [3] For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses – as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. [4] (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) [5] Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, [6] but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
c. Jesus is the paschal Lamb of our Passover.
(1) 1 Cor. 5.7 – Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
(2) 1 Pet. 1.19 – but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
d. As Israel passed through the waters, so we have been baptized into Christ Jesus, Rom. 6.3-4 – Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? [4] We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
e. As Israel received bread from heaven and water from the Rock, so we in Christ receive him as our Manna from heaven and he is our spiritual drink (1 Cor. 10.1-4).
