3. Moral of the stories: Watch and be ready, for you do not know precisely when the Son of Man will return (cf. Matt. 25.13 – “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”)

E. Preparation for the Betrayal: meeting of Judas and the Leaders, Matt. 26.14-16

Matt. 26.14-16 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests [15] and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. [16] And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

1. Jesus’ rebuke of Judas for putting down the woman’s anointing, Mark 14.3-9

2. “Payment up front:” thirty pieces of silver as Judas’ price of betrayal (see Exod. 21.32, Jesus was sold to his enemies for the same amount as a slave, gored by an ox!)

F. The Last Supper

1. The preparation of the Passover, Luke 22.7-13

a. See Exod. 12.1-20 for what the preparation might have included.

b. Powerful picture: Jesus is the Lamb of God, preparing his own sacrifice to pay sin’s debt and defeat the powers of the devil (John 1.29; Heb. 2.14-15)

2. High Drama of the NT: Jesus, the Paschal Lamb of God, shares the Passover with his disciples, Matt. 26.20.

3. Washing of the disciple’s feet, Jesus displays in dramatic power the true nature of his divine heart and servanthood, John 13.1-20.
