A Biblical Vision, Part II: Mastering the New Testament Witness to Christ

Ses s i on 2: The Gospe l s : The Man i fes tat i on of Chr i s t , Par t I 53

D. The significance of Jesus’ baptism

1. Fulfilling the righteousness of God: Jesus’ complete identification with sinners, (cf. Heb. 2.16-18 – For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. [17] Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. [18] For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.) 2. Confirmation of Jesus’ place and identity to John the Baptist, John 1.31-34 – “I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” [32] And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. [33] I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ [34] And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

3. Jesus’ relationship to the Holy Spirit: unbounded filling of the Holy Spirit

a. Isa. 61.1 – “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”

b. John 3.34 – For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
