[3] For we are the real circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh – [4] though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. Fasting without being accompanied by genuine righteousness and justice is of no spiritual value, Isa. 58.3 – “Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?” Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. b. Fasting for the sake of your righteousness to be seen before others (for their amazement and praise) is both useless and superfluous, Matt. 6.16-18 – And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others.
