3. Extraordinary cases of personal fasting
a. Our Lord in the wilderness before his temptation by the enemy
(1) Matt. 4.2 – And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
(2) Luke 4.2 – . . . for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.
(3) What do you make of the phrase, “And when they were ended, he was hungry”?
b. Moses on Mount Sinai at the giving of the Law
(1) Moses during the giving of the Law, Exod. 34.28 – So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. (2) Receiving the Tablets of the Lord, Deut. 9.9 – When I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord made with you, I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water.
