lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

b. Christ’s lowliness (our pattern) was spoken of in prophecy, Matt. 12.19-20 – He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; [20] a bruised reed he will not break and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. c. Christ’s kingship is demonstrated in humility and lowly position, Matt. 21.5 – Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.” d. Christ’s humility was demonstrated in his complete obedience to God’s will even up to the point of death itself, Phil. 2.7-8 – but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, [8] he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. e. We are to follow in the steps of our Lord, whose entire life demonstrates this lowliness, self-denial, and humility, 1 Pet. 2.21-23 – For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. [22] He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. [23] When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.

3. We are to submit in such a way that those who lead us find joy in our responses, dialogues, and conduct.
