a. Service to be seen, Matt. 6.1-4 – Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. [2] Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. [3] But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. b. Service to others on behalf of the Lord Jesus, Phil. 2.19-21 – I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. [20] For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. [21] They all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

2. Set aside time to “tithe” your talent to give yourself selflessly to bear the burdens of others in the name of Christ, Gal. 6.2 – Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

3. In an age of rudeness and cruelty, authentic courtesy to others is a true sign of service and love.

a. Kindness and tenderheartedness ought to characterize our manner to all, Eph. 4.31-32 – Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. [32] Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

b. Our manner and demeanor should neither be cruel or quarrelsome, but be gentle showing courtesy to all, Titus 3.2 – . . . to speak evil of no one, to avoid
