e. We ought to think about it before we give up our discipleship, for if we continue we will reap “a great reward,” Heb. 10.35-36 – Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. [36] For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.

C. The Call to a Compelling Testimony

1. As disciples of Christ, we follow our Lord, taking up our cross daily and following him wherever he leads us, Luke 9.23-26 – And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. [24] For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. [25] For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? [26] For who ever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”

2. As disciples of Christ, we show forth in our lives the life and power of a life surrendered to the Master.

a. As salt we preserve what is good in society, and as light we expose to society what is true, Matt. 5.13-16 – You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. [14] You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
