Becoming a Community of Disciples
Obedience (RBas §64) Q: How ought we to obey one another (cf. Eph 5:21; Phil 2:3; 1 Pet 5:5)? R: 1 As servants do their masters, just as the Lord prescribed: Whoever wants to be great among you, let him be the last of all and the servant of all (Mark 9:34; 10:43–44). 2 So as to further persuade us to humility he added to this: Just as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve (Matt 20:28; cf. Mark 10:45), and there is that saying of the Apostle: serve one another through the love of the Spirit (Gal 5:13). Receiving Clothing or Footwear (RBas §95) Q: In what disposition ought one to receive clothing or footwear, whatever it may be? R: 1 If it is too short or too long for the measure of his size he must make this known, yet with all modesty and gentleness. 2 But if he is upset because it is of poorer or cheaper quality, or because it is not new, let him be mindful of that commandment of the Lord, who says: Worthy is, not anyone at all, but the laborer of his hire (Luke 10:7; cf. Matt 10:10). 3 Let him examine himself, whether he has accomplished the works of God worthily and fulfilled all precepts whatever they may be, and then he will not seek anything else, but rather be anxious about the very thing even now given to him, whether he has received more than he deserves. 4 For what was said about food can be observed as a rule for every other matter concerning the needs of the body.
