Plot
Introduction and Rising Action 1. Nehemiah is a cup-bearer for King Artaxerxes. When he hears of Jerusalem’s poor condition he mourns, fasts, and prays. 2. He asks the king for leave and assistance to go repair the walls of Jerusalem. Climax 3. The Lord gives Nehemiah favor with the king of Persia. Nehemiah returns and leads the people rebuild the wall around Jerusalem. 4. Sanballat and Tobiah are enemies of God’s people who oppose the work on the walls. Their violent opposition slows but does not stop the building. 5. The wall is completed under Nehemiah’s supervision.
Falling Action and Resolution 6. Ezra, a scribe, reads the Law for the people.
7. When the people are grieved by hearing the Law, he tells them that the joy of the Lord is their strength and calls for celebration.
