Setting

The Jordan River – the eastern edge of the land of Canaan

• The Lord • Joshua • The priests – carriers of the Ark of the Covenant • The Israelites – a new generation after forty years in the wilderness Introduction and Rising Action 1. After forty years wandering in the wilderness, the Lord anoints Joshua to lead a new generation into the land of Canaan. 2. They come to the east side of Canaan and encounter the Jordan River. 3. The Lord tells Joshua that just as the Israelites followed Moses through the Red Sea, so they would follow his through the Jordan. Climax 4. The priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant step foot in the river and the water stop flowing. 5. With the waters piling up in a heap, the Israelites cross the river on dry land. Falling Action and Resolution 6. They set up two monuments of twelve stones to remember this great event. One they set up in the river itself where the priests stood. 7. For the second monument they took twelve stones from the dry riverbed and set them up at their camp in Gilgal. The stones were there to help the people remember the deeds of the Lord and tell the story to their children.
