As in last class session, you will have a quiz on the material covered in this lesson, so make sure that you review carefully the concepts dealt with here. Note, too, that you ought to complete the assigned reading listed above, and as you did last week, please write a brief summary for each reading. Bring these summaries to your next session (please see the “Reading Completion Sheet” at the end of this lesson). Also, now is the time to begin to think about the character of your ministry project, as well as decide what passage of Scripture you will select for your exegetical project. Do not delay in determining either your ministry or exegetical project. The sooner you select, the more time you will have to prepare! In this lesson we analyzed the Three-Step Model of biblical interpretation, a method designed to take seriously the meaning of the Bible in its original and first context, to discover those biblical principles contained in the text, and then to diligently apply those principles in faith and obedience empowered by the Holy Spirit to our lives. Now, in our next lesson, we will turn our attention to the importance of genres, or types of literature, as we employ this model of biblical interpretation to the rich, varied, and remarkable books of our holy library, the Word of God. We will provide a basic overview of the benefits involved in paying attention to genre study, and highlight some of the basic assumptions undergirding this kind of special hermeneutics.
