In this lesson we explored the nature of genre study in biblical interpretation. We saw how such study recognizes the diverse materials making up the literature of the Bible, and argued that these forms must be interpreted according to the rules of literature itself. Genre study begins with certain assumptions about the Bible as literature, ordered and governed by rules and principles like other works of literature, rules that God employed to communicate his Word to us. We looked in particular at both narrative and prophecy, and saw how careful attention to certain rules can deepen our view of our fundamental human experience, and reveal the richness of the mystery of God and his work in the world. In our next lesson, we will conclude this module with a focus upon the role of scholarly tools and resources as we attempt to understand the meaning of the text. Many remarkable written and digital tools exist to enhance the learning of the aspiring student of the Word of God, and in our next lesson we will discuss the availability, purpose, and benefits of these tools in effective biblical interpretation.
