3. Gather verses on a particular topic for study or preaching.

B. The use of a good concordance: comparing Scripture with Scripture

1. Perhaps the most essential skill in all biblical interpretation: comparing Scripture with Scripture

2. As you study a passage, a concordance allows you to quickly find other places in Scripture where the same words and ideas occur.

3. By using the numbering system in a concordance, you can identify the exact Hebrew or Greek word that is used in a passage you are studying and study it further in a Hebrew or Greek lexicon or compare it with other parts of Scripture.

4. We advocate the Strong’s concordance and its numbering system ( Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible [Word Publishing]).

V. Greek and Hebrew Lexicons

A. Definition of the tool: A lexicon gives the definitions of words. Many lexicons used for the study of the Bible also showwhich meaning is used in a particular verse of Scripture. Expository Dictionaries add comments to explain the relationship between word meanings and biblical doctrine.

B. Use of the tool: A lexicon allows you to examine the full meaning of a Hebrew or Greek word and gain insight into the meaning of that word for a particular text.
