• The major subsections of modern biblical criticism include form criticism (tracing oral tradition), source criticism (finding initial written sources), linguistic criticism (language, words, and grammar), textual criticism (copies of texts), literary criticism (rules of literature), canonical criticism (how books were selected), redaction criticism (the purposes of the authors), historical criticism (history and culture), as well as translation studies. • Regardless of the claims made by many scholars today, we may be confident that the Scriptures are in truth the Word of God which lives and abides forever.

A. Names and titles
1. “Bible” comes from the Greek word biblos (Matt. 1.1) and biblion (Luke 4.17) meaning “book.”
2. Ancient books written upon the biblus or papyrus reed, from this came biblos and finally associated with the sacred books of Scripture (cf. Mark 12.26; Luke 3.4; 20.42; Acts 1.20; 7.42)
3. “Scripture” or “the Scriptures” (i.e., the Holy Writings ) (Mark 12.10; 15.28; John 2.22; 10.35; Luke 24.27; Acts 17.11; 2 Tim. 3.15; 2 Pet. 3.16)
4. The Word of God (Mark 7.13; Rom. 10.17; 2 Cor. 2.17; Heb. 12; 1 Thess. 2.13)
