be overly concerned about giving detail; simply write out what you consider to be the main point discussed in that section of the book. Please bring these summaries to class next week. (Please see the “Reading Completion Sheet” at the end of this lesson.)
In today’s lesson we explored the need for biblical interpretation, and for our own preparation of our hearts, our minds, and our wills to engage the eternal Word of the Living God. As a divine and human book, we must depend on the resources of the Holy Spirit to understand the Word of God, and be ready to allow that Word to transform our lives before we engage it. In our next segment we examined the inspiration and authority of the Bible, and discuss the role of modern biblical criticism in the understanding of the Word of God today. In our next lesson we will go into greater detail into our Three-Step Model of biblical interpretation, a simple yet effective way designed to help us understand the truth of Scripture and bridge the gap between our ancient and contemporary worlds. The model includes a prayerful yet disciplined use of Bible study tools to enable us to grasp God’s message to the original audience, discover general principles for today, and make applications of them to our lives.
