Christian Mission and Poverty
renounce, flee. “Even if your right eye offends you, cut it out” quickly (Matt 5:9). Better is the kingdom of God to a man with one eye, than the fire to one who is not mutilated. Whether hand, or foot, or soul, hate it. For if it is destroyed here for Christ’s sake, it will be restored to life up there . . . 41. This is why it is by all means necessary for you, who are prideful, and powerful, and rich, to set over yourself some man of God as a trainer and governor. Respect him, even if it’s only one man; fear him, even if it’s only one man. Give yourself to hearing, even though it’s only one speaking freely, using harshness, and at the same time healing. For it is good for the eyes not to be always playful, but to weep and smart sometimes, for greater health. Also, nothing is more dangerous to the soul than uninterrupted pleasure. For it is blinded by melting away, if it’s not moved by bold speech. Fear this man when he’s angry; be pained at his groaning; and respect him when he stops being angry; and anticipate him when he is disapproving and punishing. Let him pass many sleepless nights for you, interceding for you with God . . . For He does not hold out against His children when they beg His pity. And for you he will pray purely, held in high honor as an angel of God, and grieved not by you, but for you. This is sincere repentance. “God is not mocked” (Gal 6:7), nor does He pay attention to vain words. For He alone searches the marrow and reins of the heart, and hears those that are in the fire, and listens to those who call out to Him in the whale’s belly; and is near to all who believe, and far from the ungodly if they do not repent . . .
