Christian Mission and Poverty
Discussion Questions
Basil and Chrysostom see people in their communities living in wealth while others live in poverty. Do you see this in your own neighborhood, community, or country? What do Basil and Chrysostom think Christians should do about this reality? In what ways do Basil and Chrysostom interpret Jesus’ commands to the rich young man differently than the way Clement interprets them? Are there any similarities between their opinions about wealth? Why would Chrysostom say that refusing to give to the poor is robbery? Are there ways you are refusing to use your hands for the benefit of people who are marginalized? Basil is fairly critical of people spending money on décor and fancy clothing. He also has concerns about people saving for their children instead of giving. Are there practices you are engaging in that detract from God’s mission among the poor? Basil seems to talk about the idea of having enough. Are you content with what you have?
