This lesson has focused on the Word of God’s ability to produce conviction at various levels, all of which lead us into a deeper, richer, and more nuanced relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The Word of God convicts us of sin, righteousness, judgment, and the truth. The Word of God is the instrument of the Holy Spirit that he uses to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Scriptures teach that sin includes anything that is out of sync with God’s perfect character, law, and will. Sin and its effects touch all humankind, being both universal in scope and corrupting in its character. The moral Law of God, as a significant part of God’s Word, convicts us of our sin, revealing the distance between our actions and the moral responsibility of God’s holy demands. The Word of God convicts regarding righteousness. It reveals our inadequacy in keeping God’s Law, and as well as God’s righteousness by faith through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Word of God convicts regarding judgment, detailing accurately and powerfully God’s intent to judge all humankind, whether living or dead, according to their deeds.
