Prayer is critical to every dimension of learning, growing, applying, and responding to the truth of God. In prayer, both you and your students have an opportunity to get God’s direct instruction and leading regarding both the meaning and application of the material. So, as you enter into a time of prayer with the students, never consider it as something that must be dispensed with quickly, something that can be ignored altogether. Do not treat it as an overly familiar or unnecessary thing; always ask the students if they have any specific requests, whether or not they are connected to the ideas and truths presented in the lesson. Show by your example and attitude that prayer is significant, a wonderfully practical and helpful way to apply truth. Remind them that by taking their specific needs to God in light of a truth, the Lord will both solidify those ideas in their lives, and provide them with specific opportunities to apply them in their ministries. Of course, everything is somehow dependent on the amount of time you have in your session, and how you have organized it. Still, prayer is a forceful and potent part of any spiritual encounter and teaching, and if you can, it should always have its place, even if it is a short summary prayer of what God has taught us, and a determination to live out its implications as the Holy Spirit teaches us.
