method we employ to discern the meaning of the Bible, it requires the humble, broken, and contrite spirit that God says throughout Scripture is his true sacrifice and the requirement for his leading and teaching. On the other hand, we can point to many examples where humility and kindness, zeal and passion severed from knowledge produced horrible spiritual results. Attitude without knowledge did not produce spiritual discernment but resulted in tyranny, confusion, even heresy. What is the relationship between proper heart preparation and attitude, and following a disciplined method and approach to the Bible? How should we order and place them in our study of Scripture?

The Three-Step Model is an effective method of biblical interpretation designed to help us understand the truth of Scripture and bridge the gap between our ancient and contemporary worlds. It focuses upon our efforts to understand the original audience, discover general principles, and make applications to life. Our objective for this lesson, Bridging the Gap between the Ancient and Contemporary Worlds, is to enable you to see that: • The Three-Step Model is an effective method of biblical interpretation designed to help us understand the truth of Scripture and bridge the gap between our ancient and contemporary worlds. • A clear and concise definition of the Three-Step Model is “to so understand the meaning of the original situation that we may discover general principles of truth which may be applied in our personal lives in the Spirit’s freedom.” • While studying individual words, phrases, paragraphs, chapters, sections, and books of the Scriptures is both edifying and necessary, all of our insights into the Scriptures ought to be in sync with the message of the whole Bible, i.e., the meaning and message of God’s final revelation to us in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
