E. Senses of God’s role as divine warrior in the OT
1. In the times before the monarchy, God is viewed as a warrior who defeats the sea or river (Exod. 15.4-10; Judg. 5.19-21; Ps. 68.22-23; Hab. 3.8-15).

a. The sea is a symbol of disorder and chaos, viewed with a kind of unstable, chaotic, even frightening sense.

b. When God overcomes this enemy, nature returns to life and produces abundant crops, Deut. 23.28; Ps. 68.10-11.
2. God is a warrior, defeating Pharaoh and his armies as they sought to destroy his covenant people, Israel, Exod. 15.3-4.
3. The Psalms reveal the God of Israel to be a God who honors his rule, and will uphold his Davidic king with power and protection (e.g., Pss. 2; 18; 24; 46; 48; 76; 89; 97; 132; 144).
4. The prophets spoke of Yahweh God as a great Lord whose armies he led into battle on behalf of his people and his honor (Isa. 6; Mic. 1.2-4; Zeph. 1.14-18; Joel 2.1-11).
5. As a result of Israel’s disobedience and rebellion against God, the Lord through his judgment and the captivity of Israel and Judah became a warrior who fought against his own people.
