study the Bible; we are to bear witness in evangelism. But we must never, at any point in our lives, rest from our pursuit of righteousness.

~ R. C. Sproul. Following Christ . (electronic ed.). Wheaton, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, 1996.

For us to speak about the nature of spirituality absent from the tangible deeds of good works, generosity, and hospitality sterilizes our view of spiritual reality, and turns our faith into something abstract and unconvincing. God loves the cheerful giver. The focus is not on the amount, but the way in which the gifts are given. Cheerfully, joyfully, and hilariously. The grace of God produces such an impact that the one so touched by it is compelled to give–of their goods, of their time, and even their lives. This is both the standard and heart of what it truly means to be spiritual, righteous, and authentic. Paul’s statement still resonates today as it did when he spoke our Lord’s word to the Corinthians: “In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Acts 20.35). With this statement, the entire tenor of Scripture agrees. Here is a sampling of the same sentiment: Ps. 41.1-3 - Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him; [2] the Lord protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blessed in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies. [3] The Lord sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health. Ps. 112.5-9 - It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. [6] For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. [7] He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. [8] His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries. [9] He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.
