A. Necessity for urban churches to engage in dialogue with global issues

1. The world has grown smaller : we have live access to things taking place thousands of miles away through technology.

2. Decisions and happenings occurring in foreign lands affect our lives in our communities.

3. Informed intercession demands a critical eye toward what is taking place around us.

4. God might lead us to respond to some global issue in a local way .

B. Engaging the larger society: assumptions and principles

The Church of Jesus Christ, as an outpost and beachhead of the Kingdom, is called to demonstrate freedom, wholeness, and justice in its engagement with the world, responding in love, obeying the leading of its head, the Lord Jesus Christ.

1. The Church of Jesus Christ is an outpost and beachhead of the Kingdom of God .

a. We are ambassadors of Jesus Christ, 2 Cor. 5.20.

b. Our citizenship is in heaven, Phil. 3.20.

c. Messiah Jesus is sending us into the world, Acts 26.17-18.
