C. What the Exodus is to the OT, so the victory of Christ over evil through his death and Resurrection is to the NT!

1. The Christ event is the harmonizing Story that makes plain what the Church is to believe, how it is to worship, what it means to mature, and how we are to witness to the Kingdom!

2. The gathering of the believing assembly as historical reciting of God’s victory in Christ

a. A distinctively Christian affair!

b. Focus on God’s saving actions in history, not on self-orientation, professional performance, or audience gratification

3. Preaching of the Word provides living commentary of the meaning of God’s actions then-and-now (i.e., what it meant and what it means).

4. The Lord’s Supper as dramatic, joyful, and sobering reenactment of the Savior’s broken body and shed blood for us, and our union with him by faith in it

5. Worship as affirmation of the “Already/Not Yet” kingdom: we experience the very presence of God by faith in Christ through the Holy Spirit, yet we await his coming to consummate his work!

D. The service of Christian worship as rehearsal and reenactment of Christ’s victory over sin, death, and evil: Gathering, Word, Sacrament, Dismissal
