4. Why is it critical to instruct a new believer in the spiritual disciplines, including the corporate disciples of public worship, Bible study, fellowship, and so on? Why isn’t merely teaching them the private disciplines enough? 5. What does the Bible teach about believers being under the spiritual oversight of shepherds? What does submission to our leaders mean in a biblical sense? 6. List the obvious spiritual blessings that come to the person who joins themselves to a church under the leadership of a godly shepherd . 7. How does one become a member of the body of Christ? How is this similar or unlike “joining a church?” 8. Why are the “one anothers” of the New Testament so important in the ongoing growth and development of the new believer in Christ? 9. What are the core responsibilities we ought to introduce a new convert to immediately after their membership in the body of Christ? What are their “privileges” as a member of the body? 10. Does a newChristian possess any special gift from the Holy Spirit? How are we to equip the new believers to discover and use their gifts in the local church? This lesson focuses upon the importance of incorporating new believers into a local assembly of believers as quickly as possible after their decision to repent and believe in the risen Lord Jesus Christ. God intends for evangelism to result in the multiplying of disciples, and there can be no legitimate discipleship that occurs outside the body of believers. While God has on occasion sustained the believer shackled in the dungeon, the gulag, the prison house, and the pit, his desired way of nurturing Christian discipleship is in the context of believers living in the community of the Spirit under the pastoral oversight of godly shepherds who are feeding and leading God’s people. The key to successful evangelism is following up new Christians by incorporating them into a local assembly of believers as quickly as possible. To follow up new believers in Christ consists of “incorporating new converts into the family of God so they can be equipped to grow in Christ and use their gifts for ministry.” This is for the purpose of maturity
