Evangelism is proclaiming and demonstrating God’s deliverance in the risen Lord Jesus Christ over the devil and the effects of sin and the Curse in the power of the Holy Spirit. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we have been given the commission to take the Gospel into the entire world (Mark 16.15-16). As we share and show the good news of Christ, men and women, along with boys and girls, will respond in repentance and faith to the Lord’s offer. He will bring deliverance to the captives through the power of the Gospel, and all who confess Jesus as Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead will be saved. In our ministry of evangelism, we do battle with the enemy while the Holy Spirit delivers people through the Word of grace in the Gospel of Christ. Evangelism assumes that we are determined to bring new converts into the very Church of God. Follow-up is absolutely necessary; every new convert must not only be won to Jesus Christ, but, as our definition suggested, each one must be incorporated into the family of God so they can be equipped to grow in Christ and use their gifts for ministry. As the apostles followed up new converts, so we too must do the same. God demands that our evangelism include follow-up and incorporation into a local assembly of believers. We follow up new believers by helping them publicly affirm their faith by baptism and membership, instructing them in the basics of the Christian life, teaching them the importance of pastoral care and oversight, and equipping them to function as a contributing member of the body of Christ. Truly, the Gospel is the power of God to salvation to every one who believes. May God give us boldness and clarity as we share the Good News in our communities, under the Spirit’s direction!
