Spiritual Warfare Binding of the Strong Man
Welcome to the Mentor’s Guide for Lesson 1, Spiritual Warfare: Binding of the Strong Man . The overall focus of the Evangelism and Spiritual Warfare module is to provide the students with a clear understanding of the knowledge and practice of evangelism and spiritual warfare in the urban context. The focus is on evangelism; the emphasis on spiritual warfare is connected to how evangelism is essentially deliverance from the power of Satan and the dominion of sin and its effects. This is important to recognize, especially because of the limited time we have to cover issues of such great significance and breadth. Notice in the “Lesson Objectives” section that these aims are clearly stated, and you ought to emphasize them throughout the lesson and during the discussions and interaction with the students. The more you can highlight the objectives throughout the class period, the better the chances are that they will understand and grasp the magnitude of these objectives. Use the objectives to both teach and review the content of the lesson itself. Do not hesitate to discuss these objectives briefly before you enter into the class period. The more you concentrate upon the actual lesson objectives, the better it will be for your students. This concentration also gives you practical “hooks” on which to hang various facts, data, and ideas that come up in the course of discussion . Draw the students’ attention to the objectives, for, in a real sense, this is the heart of your educational aim for the class period in this lesson. Everything discussed and done ought to point back to these objectives. Find ways to highlight these at every turn, to reinforce them and reiterate them as you go. This devotion focuses on the Lord Jesus’ willingness to humble himself in order to become like us. This is a prominent theme of the Scriptures (cf. Matt. 11.29; 20.26-28; Luke 22.27; John 13.14; Acts 10.38; Acts 20.35; Rom. 14.15; 15.3-5; 1 Cor. 10.33-11.1; Eph. 5.2; 1 Pet. 2.21; 4.1; 1 John 2.6). The humility of Jesus lies at the core of all ministry, mission, and outreach. In all that we are and do, we are to imitate the self-forgetful Spirit of our Lord Yeshua who was so willing to pour out his very life for the sake of others. Jesus can empathize with us in infinite ways
