What we must seek from ourselves and our students is a readiness for the Lord to search our hearts and direct us as he determines (Ps. 139.23-24). In the end, we are ready when the Holy Spirit, who makes us overseers and ministers (Acts 20.35), says that we are ready by His calling and will (Acts 13.1-3). To sum it up, challenge your students to be honest but know that none of them are omniscient regarding the will of the Lord. He will direct as to timing, method, place, and people, for he is indeed the Lord of the harvest (Matt. 9.35-38). As Mentor, now, and by the end of the second class session, you ought to begin to emphasize to the students that they need to have done the spadework and forethought about what they will be doing in their Ministry Project. Also, by this time, you should have emphasized their selection of the Scripture passage that they will be studying for their Exegetical Project. Both the Ministry Project and Exegetical Project will be done with far better thought and excellence if the students begin to think through their options and decide as early as possible what they hope to do in both activities. Do not fail to reiterate this to the students, especially at this point in the course. As in all studies, the end of the course makes many things become due, and the students will begin to feel the pressure of having a number of assignments due at the same time. Any way that you can remind them of the need for advanced planning will be wonderfully helpful for them, whether they realize it immediately or not. Because of this, we do advocate that you consider docking a modest amount of points for late papers, exams, and projects. While the amount may be nominal, your enforcement of your rules will help them to learn to be efficient and on time as they continue in their studies.
