norms for those who would go on to plant churches. Always, of course, be aware of the cultural and class issues that affect our understanding of planting churches in the inner city or among the poor. These concepts will need to be filtered through that particular lens in order to be properly understood relative to city life, both its promises and its perils. One of the most important things to talk with your students about is the possibility and the need to not only plant a single healthy church, but a movement of churches. David Garrison has written an important book recently on this subject entitle Church Planting Movements: How God is Redeeming a Lost World. Included in the Student Workbook is his definition of Church Planting Movements, and his explanation of each clause in the definition. Spend time thinking through with your students the implications of this kind of thinking for the Empowerment phase and the Transition stage of church planting. It can spur them to think in new ways about multiplying the impact of their ministry, and going to fields which are truly furthest from us. Your work as an instructor and grader begins in earnest now. Make sure that you have commitments for the ministry projects, exegetical projects, and other data together as this will be important for you to determine the student’s overall grade. Again, your discretion regarding late work can easily determine whether you dock students of points, resulting in letter grade changes, or give students an “Incomplete” until the work is finished. However you adopt your standard regarding their work, remember that our courses are not primarily about the grades that students receive, but the spiritual nourishment and training these courses provide. Also, however, remember that helping our students strive for excellence is an integral part of our instruction.
