» Following up new believers in the faith is an essential dimension of the discipleship of new converts in planting urban churches. » Immediately after new converts have joined themselves to Christ by faith, we must incorporate them into the body of believers, grounding them in the faith, and connecting them to the life of the body that they may grow in him.

In this segment we explored the concept of follow-up, that care we provide new believers immediately after their repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus. Following up new believers in the local church is “incorporating new converts into the family of God for the purpose of edification and fruitfulness, to the glory of God.” This includes the notion of welcome and introduction into the body, building up in the body to the fullness of Christ, and using one’s gifts to contribute to fulfilling the Great Commission, all to the glory of God. The practice of follow-up is critical to church planting and reproduction, and touches upon both the Assemble and Nurture phases of urban church planting. Your ability to understand this is crucial, so answer the following questions clearly and directly. Back up your answers with Scripture and good reasoning, too! 1. What are some of the specific reasons why we need to provide new converts to Christ with immediate and loving care and protection? Of these, which do you believe is the most important reason among them? 2. Why can’t we simply entrust the new believer to the Lord and the Holy Spirit, and this entrustment be sufficient for their growth and survival in Christ? What role does pastoral and spiritual care play in bringing new believers to maturity in Christ? 3. Why is it necessary to ensure that new converts are connected to a local assembly of believers as soon as possible after their commitment to Christ? Why is providing new converts with a warm welcome such an important practice in insuring their ongoing spiritual growth?
