Reading Assignment

Please read carefully the assignments above, and as last week, write a brief summary for them and bring these summaries to class next week (please see the “Reading Completion Sheet” at the end of this lesson). Also, now is the time to begin to think about the character of your ministry project, as well as decide what passage of Scripture you will select for your exegetical project. Do not delay in determining either your ministry or exegetical project. The sooner you select, the more time you will have to prepare! In this lesson we explored two motifs, the divine romance and the war of the spheres , and considered their implications for understanding the role of the Church’s mission today. We saw how God’s desire to draw out of the earth a people for his own possession included even the Gentiles, who now by faith can participate in God’s wonderful design to create a people who will live with him forever. We also saw how God is reasserting his kingdom rule in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, whose death, burial, and resurrection defeated the powers of the devil and rescinded the effects of the curse. Now, in the very life of the Church, the rule of God is present and alive on planet earth. In our next lesson we will further look at aspects of the foundation of Christian mission, concentrating upon one of its more important objects of consideration: the city. In our next lesson we will consider the spiritual significance of the city, and God’s adoption of its as symbol for his own purposes, transforming it from an image of rebellion and idolatry to his dwelling place above. Building on this understanding, we’ll explore three critical reasons why urban mission is critical for us today. The city as the seat of influence, power, and spiritual activity in the world, is becoming a magnet for the oppressed, the broken, and the poor, and is seen as the picture of our spiritual destiny and inheritance.
