The Resurgence of the Image of the Bride
In some quarters of the evangelical church today, there is a resurgence of the bride imagery in the life and worship of the church. However, this resurgence is not applying the symbolic imagery to the corporate body, but to the individual walk with Christ. In order to capture the sense of personal intimacy and connection that this imagery provides, some congregations are focusing nearly exclusively on the motif as a personal thing. For instance, teachers will teach the imagery to individuals about their individual walks with God. Songs of worship and praise are written in light of the believer’s personal marriage to Christ, and spirituality is redrawn to discuss these great truths and images in purely private terms. Obviously, this has led to some confusion about the marriage of Christ, and how far (if at all) the symbolic can be connected to individuals.
