The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. In this section we discovered the elements of the Mission as the Fulfillment of the Divine Promise framework which sees God’s working as the fulfillment of the divine promise to Abraham and David. God’s covenant promise to Abraham for a Seed that would bless his descendants, and through them all the families of the earth, was confirmed in Isaac and Jacob, and with the tribe of Judah. This covenant promise for a Seed who would bless the nations was also connected with the mercies God gave to David in the promise to possess a perpetual heir on his throne. Now, in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, God’s covenant promise to Abraham and David has been fulfilled. Mission declares this new life through God’s covenant faithfulness. It is critical that you are able to reproduce this brief outline in your preaching and teaching, so review the key points here through the questions below. 1. Briefly define the Mission as the Fulfillment of the Divine Promise motif. In what way does this theme depend on a biblical understanding of covenant? What is a covenant? 2. How often are covenants found in the Scriptures, and what are some of the common characteristics true of all covenants in the Bible? How did the Israelite culture view the covenant-breaker? Explain the conditions and benefits connected with covenants in the Bible, and how were they sealed, borne witness to, and confirmed? 3. What is perhaps the most common form of a biblical covenant? List two of the more prominent covenants God made that can be seen throughout the history of Israel. 4. Lay out the specifics of the Abrahamic covenant–what were its conditions and promised benefits? Howwas the promise specified to the tribe of Judah, and when was this realization given? 5. How does God’s promise to David recorded in 2 Samuel 7 relate to the promise to Abraham that was clarified through Judah? What were the specific promises that God made to David regarding the royal Seed–what would he do, and what would God do for him? 6. How do the promises of God to both Abraham and David find their fulfillment in the person of Jesus of Nazareth? How does his life, death, resurrection, and ascension give clear evidence that God’s promise to Abraham and David are now fulfilled?
