5. God will personally reward pastors for their faithful service in tending his flock, 1 Pet. 5.4.
B. Jesus as prototype of the pastoral ministry: following the Good Shepherd, John 10
1. He goes before them, leading them personally and not by proxy: personal leadership over the flock .
2. He leads them out by name: intimate knowledge of each sheep .
3. He leads them into spiritual nourishment, health, and abundance: feeds the sheep well .
3
4. He lays his life down for the sheep: willing to make the extreme sacrifice for their benefit .
5. He does not abandon them in times of need: is not a hireling (“only in it for the fringe benefits”) .
6. He knows his own and they know him: possesses a personal knowledge of each member of his flock .
C. The fundamental criteria of pastoral care: personal care and attention to the safety and well being of the flock . John 21.15 - When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “ Feed my lambs .”
