In this lesson we considered the significant role of the pastor in ministry. In both its Old and New Testament contexts, the image of shepherding was given to help us understand the nature of pastoral oversight and care. This imagery is applied to many who shepherded the people of God, including the Lord himself, appointed rulers and kings of Israel, and the coming Messiah, fulfilled in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. The Word of God pictures forth this shepherding ministry in the images of nurturer, protector, and leader. In our next and final lesson on foundations of Christian leadership we will consider the dynamic concept of bishop or overseer. We will examine its NT meanings, trace its probable context in the council of elders in Jewish rulership, and its continued development through the Church, considering its historical calling and criteria. We will also examine this role of leader through the images of supervisor, apostle, and spiritual director. Understanding this broad and important role, we will seek to show how the very nature of Christian leadership and Christian community demands oversight and relationship which goes beyond just the local body itself.
