d. 1 Tim. 3.1 - The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer , he desires a noble task.

e. 1 Tim. 5.17 - Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

f. Titus 1.7 - For an overseer , as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain.

g. 1 Pet. 2.25 - For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

h. 1 Pet. 5.2 - Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight , not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly.

2. Greek word for bishop ( episkopos ) often is translated “overseer,” “leader,” “elder,” or “guardian.”

3. “Bishop” and “elder” refer to the same person.

a. Titus 1.5 and Titus 1.7 refer to the same person (referred to as elder on the one hand and overseer on the other).
