C. Selection of bishops
1. In conjunction with an appointment from recognized spiritual authority
2. Through the election from a group of pastors or churches endowed with the authority to select its guardians
D. Nature of bishop’s oversight: the historical development of the bishop’s expanded authority In modern times, the role of bishop has been expanded to include not just oversight of the spiritual affairs of a particular congregation or parish, but all of those congregations and their pastors within a particular jurisdiction. In this sense, the modern day bishop functions much the same way as an apostle functioned in the early Church environment. (Cf. Paul’s care and anxiety for all the churches, 2 Cor. 11.28 - And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.)
4
1. Protector of the faith and defender of the apostolic doctrine , 2 Cor. 11.12-15
2. Superintend the churches and missionaries of pastors under their care in a jurisdiction or area, Phil. 2.19-24
3. Provide oversight for the health and growth of the churches within their appointed area of responsibility, Titus 1.4-5
