Conclusion
» The concept of bishop is rich, involving supervisory, apostolic, and spiritual directing roles over the Church. » This dynamic concept is also connected to the idea of giving apostolic oversight to the churches in an area or region, and offering support and encouragement to both churches and pastors within them. » While the term bishop is virtually synonymous with elder and applies to local leadership of individual congregations, we have seen the validity and need for there to be connection and contact amongst and between pastors, and the value of having godly leadership which facilitates our cooperation, growth, and connection. » May the Lord provide us with godly Christian leaders—deacons, elders, pastors, and bishops–who can enable us to fulfill our calling to advance the Kingdom of Christ until the Chief Shepherd returns again. Amen and amen. The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. In this segment we looked at some of the key functions of the office of Bishop the through the images of supervisor, apostle, and as spiritual director. The idea of the bishop is closely connected to the way in which churches associate with one another, whether that is through regional contact through the locale church, or through doctrinal and spiritual affinity and shared identity. Our ability to be a part of a story larger than ourselves or even our local church is directly connected with our understanding of our place in a larger whole. The concept of bishop relates directly to this more holistic, broad understanding of the Church. Carefully explore these and related issues as you review the materials on the concept of the bishop in the Church. 1. What are the three ways in which church tradition has interpreted the Word of God to make sense of and fill out the concept of bishop? In your view, how do these three images and functions relate to one another? 2. Describe the role of the bishop as supervisor . How ought we to understand this role as it relates to the independence of pastors and elders within their own congregations?
