» The New Testament outlines the role of the deacon in terms of three interrelated images, the role of a servant, a steward, and an assistant. » Because of the special needs of the urban church setting, this leadership role is critical for healthy Christian community. » We must do all we can to recruit godly men and women who can meet practical needs in our communities, while, at the same time, work and cooperate with our other leaders to ensure that our urban congregations are fully protected and established. The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. In this portion of the lesson we covered the three integrated models and images that make up the ministry of deacons in the local assembly. The deacon functions first and foremost as a servant to the people of God, as a steward of the body’s resources for the sake of just and compassionate distribution, and as an assistant to the spiritual leadership of the church. Urban congregations will always require this important office, especially so since the members of the urban community possess a number of tangible needs which will require our ongoing and compassionate attention. Review carefully the teaching in connection to the role of the deacon in the urban church, and discuss with your fellow students the ramifications of this important ministry in the city. Refer to the examples in the NT wherever possible. 1. Describe the way in which we may conceive the ministry and function of the deacon through the image of a servant. Whom do deacons serve, how do they serve, and what ought to be the result of their service in the church?
