* Why do you think the NT in Acts 6 gives us such a tangible picture of the role of deacons in the early Church? Why do all vital churches require this kind of helpful, tangible, supportive leadership? * Have you ever been in a position to represent the body through your own ministry of serving the tangible needs of the saints, and administrating resources for the benefit of the community? How did it go–was it enjoyable, were you successful, and what did you learn about yourself and others? * What has been the greatest obstacle in your ministry to caring for the neediest and most vulnerable in your church? How is this ministry perceived by other leaders in your fellowship? * How is the ministry of the deacons handled in your church? Have you ever been asked to serve in that capacity, or have you volunteered to do so? * How does your current understanding of the role of the deacon square with the three biblical images covered in our lesson, i.e., the deacon as servant, as steward, and as assistant? Which of these images helps you envision the role in the most clear way? * Why will planting and growing churches among the poor in the city demand people who can serve in the diaconate who have proven experience as faithful servants of Christ? Do you sense any call to serve in this way? Explain. * Of all of the excuses one might give for not serving as a deacon, which do you believe is the most common, and why? How might we overcome the tendency for selfishness and raise up a new generation of men and women dedicated to meeting the practical, spiritual, and physical needs of the body through the diaconate?
