This lesson focuses upon meaning and practice of eldership in the NT Church. The Greek words for leadership in the NT, presbyteros and episkopos , are virtually synonymous. Elders are called to give oversight over the affairs of the Church in a way that glorifies God, edifies the Church, and testifies to the world. The concepts below summarize the critical concepts related to this important office in the Church of Christ. The meaning for term translated elder in our NT is the Greek term presbyteros , meaning “overseer” or “elder.” The Greek words for leadership in the NT presbyteros and episkopos refer to the same office in the NT Church, with the main difference being that episkopos is used only in the Gentile church. The NT concept of elder evolved from its OT roots in the tribal system of Israel, which developed further in the practices of the Jewish synagogue, as well as its usage as an official position in the Sanhedrin, and finally to the NT Church. According to the NT, elders were either appointed by the apostles or their representatives, or commissioned within the Christian community. The pastoral epistles lay out clear spiritual qualifications for elders, who must be of recognized spiritual maturity and gifting, providing oversight to the doctrine, affairs, and governance of the Church, and serve as role models for the disciples gathered in community. 7. On a related issue, why is it necessary to avoid placing novices (i.e., spiritually immature believers) into positions of authority and oversight in the church? Does this apply to them even if they have been successful and prominent in areas of business or society? Explain. 8. What are the particular challenges and needs that make godly elders a special need for urban congregations? 9. List out some of the blessings, benefits, and rewards of faithful service as an elder. What would you say are the prices that need to be paid and the burdens that will need to be borne in order to fulfill this call?
