Readings on Servanthood
Jesus’ Concept of Servanthood
When Jesus speaks to his disciples of servanthood, he has two aspects in mind. First is the service rendered to God as the supreme authority to whom they owe their allegiance , and the second is the service which they render to people as an expression of humility and love .
~ David Bennett. Metaphors of Ministry . p. 25
Taking Our Cues from the Master Himself: Jesus as Servant
It is with an issue like [servanthood] that I see one distinguishing characteristic that sets Christians apart from the world: we serve because Christ was a servant and clearly told us to do this in memory of him. We are not to serve because it makes us feel good or serves as some kind of therapy. We are not to serve because it is a good example for our children. We are not to serve because it will make the wheels of society turn more smoothly.
We serve because Christ was a servant.
~ Kenneth H. Carter, Jr. The Gifted Pastor . p. 495
