II. Compound Names: the Name of God Involving the Names El (or Elohim ) and Yahweh

A. El Shaddai

1. Translated “God Almighty”

2. Probably relates to the word mountain , suggesting the power or strength of God

3. The name of God as a covenant-keeping God (Gen. 17.1; cf. vv. 1–8)

B. El Elyon

1. Translated “God Most High”

2. This terms refers to the supremacy of God

3. Yahweh God is a god above all so-called gods (cf. Gen. 14.18–22). Melchizedek recognized him as “God Most High” inasmuch as he is possessor of heaven and earth (v. 19).

C. El Olam

1. Translated the “Everlasting God”

2. Emphasizes the unchanging character of God (Gen. 21.33; Isa. 40.28)

D. Yahweh compound names

1. Adonai-Yahweh, “ The Lord our Sovereign ,” Gen. 15.2, 8

2. Yahweh-Jireh, “ The Lord will provide ,” Gen. 22.14

3. Yahweh Elohim, “ The Lord God ,” Gen. 2.4-25
