oriented . Although they include a number of questions and issues that have to do with the way in which people come to view and understand their life situation, the heart of these studies require wisdom in applying the truth of the Gospel to a particular situation in a specific context. Your job as mentor with the case studies is to help the students explore the ways in which the truths they are learning can be appropriated and applied within a particular situation . Allow them to create scenarios, and to think of the consequences of different solutions they might suggest. The goal here is to help the students begin to think like leaders think . Most of the application of the Word demands an openness to the Lord and an awareness of the situation so the Spirit can equip you to apply the truth well. Your job as mentor is not necessarily to become the expert on every question that the students have, but rather to ensure that the students continue to move through the materials and the assignments. Make sure that you know ahead of time what is demanded of the students for the next week, and always have available the appropriate information and materials they will need to complete their assignments for next week. This is highly important work for their learning experience, and, thankfully, it is not difficult to do. In regards to their reading assignments, remind your students that the goal is that they read the material as best as they can, and then write a few sentences on what they believe the author was trying to communicate. While we do not base the learning of the module on the texts, it is nevertheless a critical intellectual skill for your students to learn to process the thoughts of others. So, spend good time encouraging their efforts in this process. Of course, for those students who might find it difficult or impossible to finish the assignments, assure them of the intent behind this assignment , and emphasize their participation in the class as the key to their learning, not their reading or writing skills per se . While we are praying for and will work hard to help each student improve these skills, we want to emphasize the interactions among the students and the Scriptures as the heart of the course. Even in light of this, let’s not sell our students short. Strike to find the midpoint between challenge and encouragement here.
