At the core of this module is the need to grapple with the difference between what the Scriptures assert on behalf of God’s people and what appears to be taking place in their lives . This issue, this struggle, animates much of the discussion and activity of those who share the Good News with urban dwellers, many of whose lives are a constant burden and pain. What are urban ministers to say to those whose lives appear to be ravaged and hurting, exposed to every kind of pain and destruction imaginable? As ministers of the grace of God in Christ, they must learn to so understand the providence of God that they can testify of God’s love, and yet, also speak of the existence of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and their ability to interfere and resist the good will of God. This struggle and conflict is at the heart of any valid urban theology, making plain how the good providence of God can answer the challenges and needs faced by those who live in the dangerous cities of the world. Keep this cardinal duty in mind as you seek to lead the students into open dialogue about the Word of God. Pray for your students every chance you have, during the week or during the class session. Never take prayer for granted; in every way, prayer can dramatically impact your students. The Word of God is clear that the Holy Spirit can teach them and lead them into the truth: 1 John 2.20 - But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. 1 John 2.27 - But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything—and is true and is no lie, just as it has taught you—abide in him. 1 John 4.13 - By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 1 Cor. 2.13 - And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
