6. According to the Scriptures, why is God able to be the source and provider of all things? How can God sustain all things and yet not lose any strength or show any weakness in his own person? 7. What role does our Lord Jesus play in God’s ongoing sustaining of all things? What role did Jesus play in the actual creation of all the universe? 8. What is the single and uncontested purpose of all things in creation? How do we know that the universe will in fact fulfill this high purpose?

God as the Creator: The Providence of God

Segment 2: Implications of the Nicene Affirmation

Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis

2

God expresses his sovereign providence through his preservation and governance of all things. Saying that God preserves all things suggests that all things exist and hold together by virtue of God’s sovereign care and provision. Correspondingly, in saying that God governs all things we are asserting that God possesses and exercises his authority within his universe, doing with his creation whatever he purposes. Our objective for this segment, Implications of the Nicene Affirmation , is to enable you to see that: • God’s special work of providence is revealed in his preservation and governance of all things. • “Preservation” refers to the fact that all things exist and hold together by virtue of God’s sovereign care and provision. • Regardless of theories given about the origins of the universe, no one and nothing can claim any kind of independence from God as the source of all being. • “Governance” refers to the truth that God is sovereign over the entire universe, possessing all authority to do with creation whatever he purposes.
