The Person of the Holy Spirit

Welcome to the Mentor’s Guide for Lesson 1, The Person of the Holy Spirit . The overall focus of the God the Holy Spirit module is to enable your students to understand who the Holy Spirit is (person) and what he does (work), to be able to defend this understanding from the Scriptures, and to see the implications of these truths for ministry in and through the Church. The focus of this lesson is, first, to establish that the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person; second, to understand his relationship to the other members of the Holy Trinity; and third, to affirm that he is the Divine Life-giver who creates, sustains, and renews physical and spiritual life. Notice in the objectives that these aims are clearly stated, and you ought to emphasize them throughout the lesson, during the discussions and interaction with the students. The more you can highlight the objectives throughout the class period, the better the chances are that they will understand and grasp the magnitude of these objectives. Do not hesitate to discuss these objectives briefly before you enter into the class period. Draw the students attention to the objectives, for, in a real sense, this is the heart of your educational aim for the class period in this lesson. Everything discussed and done ought to point back to these objectives. Find ways to highlight these at every turn, to reinforce them and reiterate them as you go. This devotion focuses on the fact that the person who wants to know God is dependent on the ministry of the Holy Spirit. As you begin this module on the Holy Spirit, it is undoubtedly true that you have some students who are confident about their ability to understand and complete the material and some who are apprehensive . Usually these attitudes come from past experiences with schooling. Students who have been successful at academics in the past tend to be confident while students who have struggled or failed tend to be apprehensive. This devotion gives you an opportunity to talk about those feelings. While learning theology does involve study, hard work, and thinking skills; it is not completely the same as other
