b. “To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace,” Rom. 8.6.

c. We are called to a renewal of mind, Rom. 12.2 (cf. Eph. 4.17-18).

d. The most visible sign of a changed mind is our confession of sin. We recognize and are willing to call sin things that we previously justified or overlooked (Prov. 28.13; 1 John 1.8-9).

2. Repentance involves a change of HEART .

a. The biblical word for this change of heart is contrition.

(1) Contrition is humble sorrow over sin.

(2) The Hebrew word “contrite” [ dâkâ ] literally means “to be broken into pieces” or “crushed.” (3) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite [ dâkâ ] heart, O God, you will not despise, Ps. 51.17.

b. True contrition:

(1) “Trembles” at the Word of the Lord, Isa. 66.2.

(2) Expresses physical and verbal signs of humility, Luke 18.13.

(3) Is called “godly sorrow,” 2 Cor. 7.10.

(4) Expresses true emotional sorrow for sin, Joel 2.12; Zech. 12.10-13.1, and calamity, Joel 2.12. (5) We already mentioned a Hebrew word for repentance, shubh , which means “to turn back.” There is a second Hebrew word for repentance nâcham which is also used throughout the Old Testament. It literally means “to sigh deeply.” It suggests that you feel badly about what you have done. It is a term associated
