Job 29.16 - I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the cause of himwhom I did not know. John 7.51 - Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does? We ought to help our students become more and more proficient at weighing information in the context of cases, and passing informed judgment based on the facts of the situation and the truths of Scripture. An essential element in the pedagogy of the Capstone curriculum is the investigation and out-of-class investigation of the students into the materials and readings. Make certain that the students understand the assignment for next week, especially the memorized Scripture, and their summary of the reading assignment. Please reassure the students about the nature of the reading assignment. This is not meant to be difficult or unenjoyable for the them. Rather, the goal in the reading assignment is that they would read the material as best as they can and write a few sentences on what they take them to mean. If they have difficulty in reading the assignments, then simply emphasize their “best effort” as the criteria that the class session is anchored on here. Of course, analyzing the written text is a critical intellectual skill for your students to learn. However, we do not wish to penalize nor shame those students whose reading levels make this kind of material either daunting or intimidating. So, above all else, communicate your aims with the reading assignment in a pro-learning way, and seek to encourage them in this process. Again, for those students who might find this difficult, assure them of the intent behind this assignment, and emphasize their understanding of concepts of the material covered in class as the key, not their reading skills per se. We want to improve their skills, but not at the expense of their encouragement and edification . Nor, however, do we want to sell them short. Strike to find the midpoint between challenge and encouragement here.
